Note: The following authentic testimonial was sent to me unsolicited, which after receiving I wrote back to requesting permission to use, which explains why locations, grades, etc. are not always listed. I also may edit, for obvious reasons, specific techniques mentioned from the book. ...Craig
Classroom Discipline 101 Success Story
"Can I just say a huge thank you for changing not only my teaching day but
my life! I was very apprehensive about buying the book without first
seeing any of it's contents but I must say the gamble I took buying it has
certainly paid off.
I would say that over the years my discipline in the classroom had slipped
due to the change in our society. Children quite rightly have rights but
it seems to have gone too far. Britain has become somewhat of a nanny
state.
Judging by your book schools in the U.S. seem to have the "I'll give you
three warnings before I take any action" philosophy that we have here in
Scotland. Well all that has changed for me since reading your book and I
must say it has had dramatic results. I am a peripatetic music teacher
and work predominantly with the 7-8 age group. I find that as I am a
visitor to the schools the children will try and take advantage of that.
I can't build up relationships with them like their class teachers as I
only see them for 40 minutes once a week.
I found in the past that a third of the class would behave no matter what,
a third would try it on but would usually listen to my requests but then
there was always the third that just wouldn't do as I asked them no matter
what strategies I tried (the calm, nicey nicey approach or the I'm now
losing my patience approach).
Now that the children now exactly where they stand and the only warning
they get is the rules we read out at the beginning of the lesson (until
I'm sure they all know it) I have much more control of my lessons and I
feel the children now respect me more. I no longer dread teaching
particular classes like I did in the past which makes me feel more
confident both in school and out. I feel less agitated and generally more
relaxed and in control which has such a knock on effect to other areas of
my life.
So once again thank you so much for giving me the courage to discipline my
classes properly and in return making me and my pupils much happier
people. "
