Awesome First Week!
ByI had an awesome first week at my new teaching job! Actually the best start to the school year in the 5 years I have been teaching high school. I just switched schools and am currently teaching 7th, 8th and 10th grade German. I had all three classes write out the rules which actually took 2 full class days. I had three students challenge me already and one served detention. The one student said it wasn’t going to be worth it to break the rules in the future. I kind of made a mistake Friday by not having another 10th grader serve detention that day because I couldn’t stay after but I realized that did open me up for being inconsistent so starting Monday – one word from any one will get them an automatic detention. The kYe is to saty consistent. My bellwork Monday is going to be rule related as well and I think I am going to go over all the rules again. I feel for the first time in my teaching career that I am total control! Thank you!! Also to answer someones question about late busses…if it isn’t possible to stay after school then lunch time visit might also work….or morning detention. Just a thought.

Its Sunday night and I am about to go into school tomorrow with a kick ass attitude! I live in the uk and I am in my first year of teaching. It strted off really well, and I blagged a ‘presence’ in the classroom. But the n they started to realise there wasnt really any significant sanctions. You have to wirte home to give a detention and leave it 3 days to then give it. So it is SUCH a hassle tht they end up just having about 5 warnings and then the class ends up riotious by the end (art lesson secondary – paint involved!) The head of department really wants to help if I need it so he takes them out, bauls at them, then sends them back in ‘repentent’ but really with a cheeky little smile on their face of victory. I also cannot suspend them from lessons if they dont attend the 15min lunch time detention. (Cant even keep them 10mins aft school).
So this is what im thinking. 15min lunch det for either that day if I have had them in the morn, or next day (reminder in the register). If they dont come I will wirte home with the 30min afterschool det issued and call home. If they dont come to that we have a protocol of the head of department writing home with more authority. Hopefully it wont come to that.
Other factor is if I give the 15min det and they continue to argue and I give them the chioice of not being disruptive and back to task or relocation next door. Do I then put note in register for the reminder of the 15mins for next day ( they tend to run off when bell goes form relocation room) and if they dont come start the whole thing of afterschool det?
Hoping it will work and there wont be a loop whole or that I wont bottle it at the last minute!
That is the whole key–once they all think it is not worth it you have the environment you want!
